Getting started

  1. A sample room (Room 204), a sample lab and two sample classes are already in the app when you open it, so nothing is empty.
  2. Open Rooms and drag the desks until the plan matches your actual room. Add the door, board and windows — a substitute uses them to orient.
  3. Open Classes and paste your roster, one name per line.
  4. Open Charts → New chart, choose the class and the room, and let it seat everyone. Adjust by hand on the Seating screen.
  5. Press Print / PDF, choose the viewpoint, and save the substitute folder copy.

Frequently asked questions

Do my charts really save?

Yes — that is the whole point of the app. Every chart is written to disk as you edit it. Quit the app, restart the Mac, come back in March: the chart is still there.

Is there a free version?

No. SeatMaker Pro is a paid app with no free tier and no free trial. Pro Monthly is $1.99 per month, Pro Yearly is $9.99 per year ($0.83 per month), and Lifetime Access is a single $19.99 purchase. All three unlock exactly the same features.

How do I restore a purchase on another Mac?

Sign in to the same Apple Account, then use Restore Purchases — it is on the purchase screen, in Settings → Purchase, and in the SeatMaker Pro application menu.

How do I cancel a subscription?

In the App Store under Account Settings → Subscriptions, or from Settings → Purchase → Manage subscription inside the app. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the period you already paid for runs to its end.

What does the print orientation toggle actually do?

“From the front of the room” draws the plan with the board at the top — the way students see the room. “From the teacher's desk” turns the whole plan 180°, so left and right match a person standing at the front facing the class. Substitutes read the second one far more easily. Print one of each.

Two students keep ending up together.

Open Classes, press the ⚠ button next to one of them, and tick the other under “Must not sit next to”. Every chart now flags them in red when they are adjacent, and Fix conflicts on the Seating screen rearranges them.

Does it sync between my Macs?

No. SeatMaker Pro has no cloud sync by design — student names never leave the Mac they were typed on. To move a chart, export it as a PDF.

Does the app send anything anywhere?

Only to Apple, and only to check whether you have a valid purchase. There is no analytics, no advertising and no server of ours.

Can I import a roster from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Copy the column of names, then use Classes → Paste list and paste them in, one per line.
