Frequently asked questions

Does this app give me a Pleasure Craft Operator Card?

No. A card can only be obtained by passing a boating safety test from a Transport Canada accredited course provider. This app is study material to help you prepare for that test. It does not administer the test and it does not issue a card.

What is the test format?

The boating safety test is published as 50 multiple-choice questions with a 75% pass mark, which is 38 correct out of 50. It is open book and takes about 75 minutes online. The card is valid for life. Confirm the current details with your accredited course provider.

Is there a free version?

No. A purchase is required to use the app; there is no free tier and no free sample content. The plans are Monthly at $4.99 USD, Yearly at $12.99 USD and Lifetime at $19.99 USD, all in US dollars, and every plan unlocks the identical complete app.

How do I restore a purchase on a new device?

Sign in with the same Apple Account you bought with, then tap Restore Purchases. It is on the purchase screen, and after purchase it is always available in Settings → Subscription → Restore Purchases. If nothing is found, check that you are signed in with the Apple Account that made the original purchase.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Open the iOS Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and cancel there. You can also use Settings → Subscription → Manage Subscription inside the app. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid the next renewal.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Use reportaproblem.apple.com to request one.

Does the app work offline?

Yes, entirely. The question bank, the diagrams and the checklists are all bundled in the app. The only time it needs the internet is to talk to the App Store about your purchase, and to open a source link in your browser if you tap one.

Does the app collect my data?

No. There is no account, no sign-in and no server, and the app contains no analytics or advertising SDKs. Your study progress stays on your device. See the Privacy Policy.

How do I reset my progress?

Settings → Study Data → Reset Progress, or Progress → Reset Progress. This deletes your stats, streaks, bookmarks, test history, trainer results and equipment checklists, and cannot be undone.

A question or rationale looks wrong to me

Please tell us. Email dmjks120@gmail.com with the question text and what you think the right answer is, and we will check it against the regulation and correct it in the next update if needed. Every rationale in the app names the source it was written from, and the full list is in Sources & Citations.

Where does the content come from?

Every question, rationale, diagram and checklist is original material written for this app from publicly published Canadian sources: the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 and its regulations, and Transport Canada's published boating safety material, which is released under the Open Government Licence – Canada. Nothing is copied from any accredited course provider or any other app.

Which devices are supported?

iPhone and iPad running iOS 17 or later. The app supports Dynamic Type, VoiceOver, dark mode and read-aloud on every question.

Does it cover my province?

The requirements in the app are the federal ones, which apply across Canada, and it flags the places where provinces differ — the 10 km/h shoreline speed limit adopted by some provinces, the Ontario sewage rules, and the provinces and territories where the ticketing system does not apply. Local restrictions on individual waterways come from the schedules to the Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations; always check the ones for the water you are using.
